Open a RAR File Online

Windows and macOS cannot open .rar files on their own, and installing an extractor just to look inside one is overkill. Drop the file here: the full contents are listed in your browser, you can preview text and images, and you only extract something if you actually want it.

How to open a RAR file in 3 steps

  1. Drop the .rar file

Drag the file onto the tool above or click to choose it. It is opened by your browser, locally, in about the time it takes to read it from disk.

  2. Look through the contents

The archive opens as a tree: every file and folder with its size. Click a text file or an image to preview it right in the page.

  3. Take out what you need

If something is worth keeping, select it and download the file directly or as part of a ZIP. If not, close the page; nothing was ever uploaded.

What opening a RAR here shows you

Everything on this list is visible before you extract a single file.

Why your computer cannot open .rar by itself

A licensing story, not a technical one

ZIP has been an open specification for decades, so Windows and macOS ship support for it. RAR decompression is licensed from RARLAB, and neither operating system bundles it, hence the dead end of 'Windows cannot open this file'.

The usual desktop fixes

7-Zip is the free option on Windows, WinRAR is the format owner's own tool, and The Unarchiver is the common free pick on macOS. All three open .rar files after installation.

Opening is not extracting

You can look inside an archive without taking anything out. On this page the tree and previews are read from memory, and files only land on your disk if you download them.

Works on any modern browser

No installation is the whole point, so the opener runs as a plain page.

Windows

Chrome, Edge, and Firefox on Windows 10 and 11 open .rar files here with no admin rights and no installer.

macOS

Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. A quick way to check a .rar on a Mac before reaching for The Unarchiver.

Phones and tablets

Fine for browsing the contents of small and medium archives. Large ones can exhaust a phone's memory.

Frequently asked questions

How do I open a RAR file online for free?

Drop it into the tool at the top of this page. The contents are listed immediately, with preview for text and images, and you can download any file you want. It is free, and nothing is installed or uploaded.

Can I open a RAR file without WinRAR?

Yes. WinRAR is one option among several: 7-Zip and The Unarchiver are installed alternatives, and this page opens .rar files directly in the browser with no installation at all.

What does opening a RAR file show?

The full file tree: names, sizes, and folder structure. Text files and images can be previewed in the page; everything else is listed and can be extracted on selection.

Is it safe to open a RAR file from the internet?

Looking inside is the cautious move: the tree and previews let you judge the contents before extracting anything. Still check where the archive came from and scan it if in doubt; a container is only as safe as what was packed into it.

Why does Windows say it cannot open .rar files?

Windows ships with ZIP support but has never licensed the RAR decompression code, so .rar files have no built-in handler. A browser-based opener like this page, or an installed tool, fills that gap.

Can I open a password-protected RAR file here?

Yes, when you know the password. The page asks for it, decrypts the archive locally, and never sends it anywhere. Encrypted split volumes are not supported.

Does opening the archive download anything to my computer?

No. Opening and previewing read the archive in memory, in the page. Files reach your disk only when you explicitly download them.
